ARTICLE 1
Name

The name of the organization is Michigan Technological University Student Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and its abbreviated title is MTU AIChE.

ARTICLE 2
Objectives

The objectives of this organization are:
  1. To advance chemical engineering in theory and practice among students by tutoring entry level chemistry and chemical engineering courses.

  2. To provide contact between students and chemical engineering professionals in both academia and industry by arranging plant trips, presentations, and social events.

  3. To provide contact with students of other colleges and universities with an interest in chemical engineering by arranging trips to student and national AIChE conferences and visits to other college and Universities.

ARTICLE 3
Membership

  1. Voting membership will be granted to those persons who are registered undergraduate/graduate students at Michigan Tech.

  2. Associate membership will be granted to faculty of Michigan Tech who show a supportive and active interest in the MTU AICHE.

  3. All voting members are required to have paid dues, as stated in the bylaws, before they will be considered a voting member.

  4. No discrimination on the basis of ethnic group, handicap, gender, sexual preference, religion, national origin, height, weight, age, or marital status will exist within MTU AICHE.

ARTICLE 4
Officers & Class Representatives

The officers of the organization will consist of a president, a vice president, a secretary, and a treasurer, all of whom will be elected voting members. Class representatives will consist of one student from each class (freshmen, sophomore, Junior, Senior, and Graduate), and will be appointed/ elected by the executive board. The term of office, election and duties of the officers and class representatives are as provided in the bylaws.

ARTICLE 5
Advisor

The advisor is a member of the chemical engineering faculty, and will maintain continuity, offer guidance, help cut through administrative red tape, serve on the executive board, and will assist officers in running the organization. (The advisor is an all-around resource person.)

ARTICLE 6
Executive Board

There will be an executive board consisting of the officers, class representatives, and the faculty advisor. Voting members of the board will consist of only the officers and the faculty advisor, who will vote only in the event of a tie.

ARTICLE 7
Vacancies of Office

In the event of absence, resignation, incapacity death or removal of the president, that office will be taken over for the unexpired term by the vice president. If for any reason the vice president is unable to take over the office the secretary will assume the presidency for the unexpired term, and will appoint a voting member as a new secretary (the appointment to be ratified by the Executive Board as provided in the second paragraph herein).

If an office, except that of the president, will become vacant for any reason it will be filled for the unexpired term by appointment by the president. This appointment will be ratified by a majority affirmative vote of the executive Board.

ARTICLE 8
Meetings

  1. Regular meetings will be held at least once per month during the academic year.

  2. Executive Bored meetings will be held before regular meetings or to prepare an agenda.

  3. Other meetings, which may include special meetings or other required business, may be called by the president or at the request, made to an officer, by ten percent of the voting members.

  4. A quorum will consist of not less than one third of the voting members, including at least two officers.

  5. A quorum of the executive board will consist of not less than two thirds of its voting members.

  6. At any meeting, order will be conducted in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order - Newly Revised.

ARTICLE 9
Committees

Each person becoming a member will choose a standing committee on which to serve. Additional members may be appointed to a standing committee by the president.

Standing Committees:

  1. Publicity Committee: Will provide public exposure of the MTU AIChE through all forms of media (newspapers, radio, fliers, postings, electronic display etc.). This committee will also recruit new members.

  2. Finance Committee: will assist the treasurer in preparing fundraisers. This committee will also recruit members to participate in the fundraiser and see that it is carried through.

  3. Activities Committee: will make recommendations for activities (plant trips & industrial speakers, social, winter carnival etc.). This committee will also recruit members to set up activity and see that it is carried through.

Special committees will be appointed by the president. These committees will continue to function until the service for which they were appointed is completed or discharged, and they have made a report to the president.

The president is automatically a member of all committees.

ARTICLE 10
Finances

  1. The fiscal year of the chapter will be from June 1 to May 31.

  2. Monies will be generated by fundraisers and membership dues.

  3. Monies will be kept in a recognized banking institution within Houghton County.

  4. All expenditure must have approval by the treasurer and/or the president.

  5. Any expenditure over $50.00 will require approval by the executive board as stated in the bylaws.

  6. Sound bookkeeping practices will be maintained at all times.

ARTICLE 11
Amendments & Revocation

Any proposed revocation, addition or amendment to this constitution may be made as follows:

The Proposed revocation or amendment may be initiated by a majority affirmative vote of the Executive Board or not less than five voting members. It must be presented in writing, duly by said Executive board or members at a business meeting of the organization, at which a quorum is present. To be adopted, it must be passed by two-thirds or the nearest whole number of two-thirds of qualified voters, by a vote taken at the next meeting, provided one week has past between meetings, after which the said proposal was made.

All amendments will be binding to the same degree as the provisions of the constitution.

Any proposed revocation, addition or amendment to this constitution must have the Dean of students approval before implementation.

BY-LAWS

ARTICLE 1
Membership

  1. Any student as provided in Article 3 of the constitution may apply for membership in the student chapter on the Michigan Technological University campus.

  2. New members will be recognized at the time their dues are paid.

  3. A motion for the expulsion of a member will be submitted first in confidence to the president, with a full statement of the malfeasance, misfeasance, or nonfeasance on which the motion is based; the resident will in conjunction with the executive board, question the accused member and have the power to decide (A) whether the motion will be dropped without further action, (B) whether the accused member will be allowed to resign without report to the membership, or (C) whether the motion will be referred to the membership as a whole. No action will be taken, in any event, without notice to the member who will be given due process.

  4. A member may resign by notice to the president of the chapter, providing all indebtedness of such member to organization has been paid.

  5. Members in debt to the organization, must pay their debt to the organization within the year, and will be held responsible for all legal dues that the organization incurs in trying to settle the dispute.

ARTICLE 2
Dues

The Annual Dues will be determined by the executive board before the first meeting of the academic year and will not be subjugated to change until the following year.

ARTICLE 3
Nomination and election of Officers & Class Representatives

Officers:

During the month in advance to the election of officers the nominating committee, which will be appointed by the president, will consider nominations for officers for the next year. All proposed nominees will be approached as to their willingness to serve, and their consent obtained before their names is placed on the ballot.

Nominees for the presidency must be able to complete the full term of office (i.e. Staying on campus for the full academic year). Other nominees must be able to complete the term to the best of their ability (i.e., staying for part of the year do to graduation or co-op).

Nominations will be taken during the meeting prior to elections. After being nominated, the person’s name will be placed on the ballot. Also, a space will be left upon the ballot for write-in candidates. The election of officers for the following school year will be held at a designated meeting before school closes at the end of the Spring Semester (quarter).

Elections will consist of taking an oral vote (show of hands), in absence of the candidates, with the provision that a member who is unable to attend the election can vote by written ballot. This written ballot must be completed, signed, and given to an officer, not running for an office, as witness who will add in the written vote at the time of election.

Two members appointed by the president will constitute the tellers, who will verify the names on the written ballots and will count the total written and oral vote. The secretary will announce the results immediately after the election declaring the candidate receiving the largest number of votes for each office. No teller will be a candidate for office.

Incumbency of one office shall not render anyone ineligible for nomination and election to another office, but no member may hold two elective offices at the same time.

Term of office will begin at the end of spring Semester (Quarter). Training of the new officers is the responsibility of the previous officers.

Class Representatives:

Each class will have one representative that is appointed or voted into office by the executive board no later than two months after the beginning of the new academic year.

ARTICLE 4
Duties of Officers & Class Representatives

President:

  1. Will preside at all regular and special meetings of the organization, serve as chair of the executive board and preside at its meetings.
  2. Will administer the affairs of the organization with the assurance of the executive board and other committees.
  3. Will make all special committee appointments and will have the power to remove any committee member.
  4. Will approve all bills before their payment, approve all official matter to be published or sent out for publication by the chapter and will endeavor to assume active leadership of the chapter at all times.
  5. Will be the presiding coordinator and host of the region’s student conference when it is held at MTU. Also this position will not need the Executive Board approval for monies spent towards the conference but rather that of the advisor.

Vice President:

  1. Will preside at all meeting of the organization in the absence of the president.
  2. Will assist the president in administering the affairs of the organization.
  3. Will be the chair of the Activities committee.

Secretary:

  1. Will post and keep a full and accurate record of the proceedings of all regular and special meetings of the organization of the executive board.
  2. Will post notices for meetings of the organization and for the executive board, and keep a file of the correspondence made by the organization.
  3. Will maintain a complete and current list of the membership and visitors present at meetings.
  4. Will be the chair of the publicity committee, which is to aid the secretary with the duties of that office.

Treasurer:

  1. Will be accountable for all funds entrusted to the office and will be prepared to report the financial condition of the organization at all times.
  2. Will disburse funds only upon executive order.
  3. Will be the chair of the Finance committee.

Class Representatives:

  1. Will monitor the feelings and desires of the current membership and report such to the executive board.
  2. Will announce all regular meetings and activities to their respective class, by making an announcement at a lecture in which the class meets.

ARTICLE 5
Code of Ethics and Constitution

This organization will honor the constitution and code of ethics of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, which will read and interpreted by the faculty advisor once each year.

The constitution of the organization will be read by the executive board at least once a year and will be available to any member upon request.

ARTICLE 6
General

  1. The chapter will be governed by its constitution and bylaws.
  2. In any case or question concerning the interpretation of any portion of the constitution bylaws the decision of the executive board of the organization will be final.
